Choosing a Funeral Home? Avoid These Five Common Mistakes

When it comes to selecting a funeral provider, do you know what to look for?

There are many funeral homes to choose from, and it can be difficult to determine which is the best for your needs. By learning how to assess your options wisely, you could save a significant amount of money and improve your satisfaction with the services received. One smart strategy is to learn about people's most common mistakes when choosing a funeral home.

Here are five blunders you’ll want to avoid.

Mistake #1: Making your selection in haste

If you or your family members have used a certain funeral home in the past, don’t automatically assume it’s the best choice. You may need to find a funeral provider quickly or perhaps overwhelming grief is getting in the way of sound decision-making. When considering funeral providers, however, it is always wise to do comparison shopping. That’s the only way to tell if they offer the services you are seeking, if the staff and facilities are to your liking, and if the pricing is in line with your budget. Be sure to determine if your loved one has a pre-arranged funeral plan in place. If so, that document will provide direction for the funeral home selection.

Mistake #2: Not setting a budget

Shopping for a funeral should be like making any major purchase: determine what you can afford before you begin your search. While many people simply accept the funeral home’s price and then scramble to come up with the money, that isn’t the most effective way to go about it. Together with your family members, discuss a budget and decide on an amount you can spend without undue hardship and then stick to it. Do you have preferences regarding the type of arrangement? For example, is a traditional funeral service with burial favored, or would cremation with a memorial service be more fitting? If you are planning for a loved one, did they leave any written instructions or express specific funeral wishes? Considering questions like these will help guide you in setting your budget and in planning the ceremony.

Mistake #3: Basing your decision solely on cost

As noted above, pricing is critical when assessing funeral homes. However, it should not be the sole factor in your decision. You also want a funeral home that can deliver the services you desire and will provide them with the utmost quality and care. In times of deep grief, no one wants to feel like a number. And, of course, sending your departed loved one off with a meaningful tribute should be your primary concern.

Mistake #4: Skipping the research

Start by conducting an internet search of funeral homes in your area and visiting each of their websites. Review the information closely to get a feel for their approach to funeral services. Do the images represent an appealing setting for your needs? Read staff biographies and client testimonials, if provided. If pricing is a concern, review any information they offer regarding the details of their funeral costs. It’s also wise to check social review sites like Yelp and Merchant Circle to see what others had to say about their experience with the funeral providers you’re considering. Trusted friends and family can also be good sources for recommendations. Once your short list of funeral homes is compiled, it’s best to visit them in person.

Mistake #5: Overlooking location considerations

You and your family will be making many trips to the funeral home you choose. With that in mind, it is best to select a provider in reasonable proximity, if possible. Congested highways, lengthy drive times, and treacherous roads can be particularly upsetting when you are bereaved. Confine your search to areas that you and your guests can travel to with relative ease.

Funeral homes come in many shapes and sizes and are designed to meet different needs and budgets. Knowing what you are looking for is wise before you begin your search.
