A repast or reception is an important part of the funeral process. By bringing everyone together in a less formal atmosphere, it provides a wonderful opportunity for guests to express their sympathies to the family of the deceased. A repast also allows friends and family to support one another during their time of grief, and it can be used as a time to remember and celebrate the life of the one who passed away, as well.

The primary purpose is to gather together after the funeral or memorial service, so there’s no need to stress about planning countless activities or elaborate menus. Above all, give careful thought what the person whose life you are celebrating would have wanted. Here are some helpful tips to keep you repast budget low while still creating a beautiful, memorable event that honors your loved one.

Choose a low-cost venue. The location of the repast should be based on the number of people expected and the accessibility of sites in the area. Having the reception at an upscale restaurant or exclusive locale certainly isn’t a requirement. Some people prefer to host it at a family member’s home, while others may choose the fellowship center at the church or funeral home, a banquet hall, or an inexpensive local eatery. If you decide to the have the reception at a restaurant, consider offering a limited menu or a buffet-style meal. Weather permitting, hosting the repast gathering at a nearby park is an excellent option, especially if there are young children in attendance. If you need help choosing a location for your loved one’s repast, your funeral director can provide valuable guidance.

Make it a potluck. There are many alternatives to paying an expensive caterer’s bill. By hosting a potluck repast, it can enhance the personal vibe and save you significant amounts of money, too. Your family and friends will probably be more than happy to contribute their favorite fare as a way to show their love for you and the deceased. Depending upon the time of day and the circumstances, you could also scale back the affair and have an appetizer or dessert potluck, with simple snacks prepared by a few select family members and close friends.

Make your own centerpieces. Attractive table centerpieces can add grace and splendor to any reception venue, and they don’t have to cost a fortune. From versatile Mason jar centerpieces to glowing memorial candles, there’s no shortage of ideas and tutorials for creating simple, beautiful and inexpensive repast table centerpieces.

Hand out your loved one’s favorite candy. Did your mom love M&Ms? Was your dad a fan of Snickers bars? Whatever candy makes you think of your loved one, buy some snack size packages at the store to give out as a fun, unique funeral remembrance. You can even amp up the personalization by attaching a favorite quote, scripture passage or picture of the deceased to the package.

As you go about your repast planning, keep in mind that it should be a time to gather, reminisce, and connect with others who are grieving. Your guests aren’t expecting a gala or an extravagant meal. Even if you have budgetary restrictions, you can host a post-funeral reception that will honor the life of your loved in a beautiful way.
