Obituary of Mary Lee Ervin

Mary Lee Ervin quietly journeyed from labor to reward on October 7, 2020 and is now eternally dancing with her loving husband Ken. Mary was born on November 1, 1930 in Kingsport, Tennessee. As the oldest child of Etta Mae Wilson and James Howard Bond, Mary always kept her three sisters and only brother very close. Mary was educated in the public schools of Kingsport and graduated from Douglass High School as class valedictorian in 1948. In addition to being a great student, Mary was also very involved in school activities. She was a majorette in the marching band, captain of the girls' basketball team, and sang in the school choir. She went on to Morristown N.I. Jr. College and graduated with honors in 1950. She continued her education at Tennessee State University and obtained a B.S. Degree in 1952, earning Business ED Distinction. During the summer months, Mary worked in the Department of Recreation and after graduating from Tennessee State, she began teaching in the school system in Alamo, TN. She would go on to earn post-graduate certifications from Loyola College, Saint Agnes College and the Baltimore County Community College. Mary married Kenneth Ervin (also a native of Kingsport), on June 6, 1953 and the couple were blessed with two lovely daughters. Kenneth preceded her in death on March 17, 1980 after sharing twenty-seven wonderful years with the love of his life. Mary was devoted to education and while living in Baltimore she worked in several Baltimore City public schools, including Carver, Frederick Douglass, Eastern, Paul Lawrence Dunbar and Lake Clifton. She was an educator for over 38 years. During that time, she served as a business education teacher, a business education department head, and a unit principal. She retired from Lake Clifton as an assistant principal in 1994. She always enjoyed teaching and being around young people. So much so that after retiring, she began tutoring at Pitts Ashburton Elementary Middle School. Mary lived an active life and belonged to several organizations. She was a devoted member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and belonged to the La Finesse Bridge Club. She was also quite involved at Augsburg Lutheran Church where she was assistant superintendent of Sunday School, a dedicated choir member, and vice president and treasurer of Women of Augsburg. She later joined Heritage United Church of Christ and served in many ministries while a member there. Mary's favorite hobbies included dancing, traveling, reading, and playing cards. She leaves to cherish her precious memory, her daughters Renee Dominique Leon of California City, California and Kelvonne Ervin-Winston (Eddie) of Baltimore, Maryland; three grandchildren, Kenneth Ervin, Eric Leon and Erica Leon; a devoted brother, Thomas Bond (Sylvia); three sisters, Iris Wardlaw (Bonnie), Jacqueline Harris (Gregory), and Jessica McGlone (Michael Nicholson); a loving goddaughter, Vivian Lomax; a special friend and devoted companion for over twenty-five years, Charles Gaskins; and a host of relatives, friends and loved ones. Greene Funeral Services, 8728 Liberty Road, Randallstown, MD (21133) @10:00AM. The interment will take place at Arbutus Memorial Park, Baltimore MD immediately following services.
