Obituary of Dorothy Carolyn McManus
Dorothy Carolyn McManus, age 77, returned home to her Heavenly Father on December 2nd, 2020.
Born March 16th, 1943, Dorothy was the eldest child of Dorothy Rebecca and John Lockwood Camphor. She grew up in the Gilmore Projects in Baltimore, Maryland, with her three sisters, Helen, Beverly "Ann," and Delores. Her earliest influences in life were her Aunt Reita "Biggie" and Uncle Allen Taylor.
Upon completion of a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Coppin State and a Graduate degree in Education at the University of Maryland, she made it her life's work to educate Baltimore's children. Dorothy worked for the Baltimore City Public School System for 38 years. She taught at Madison Square Elementary School, Hilton Elementary, George Washington Elementary School, and Mary E. Rodman Elementary School. Her favorite subject to teach was math. Dorothy's teaching philosophy was to teach her students as she wanted others to teach her children and grandchildren.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dorothy was a devout Christian. She was an active member of Macedonia Baptist Church and then became a Member of New Shiloh Baptist Church after she married Julius on September 28th, 1972. She served the church as the Church School Superintendent, taught Bible class, and was a member of Daughters of Dorcas.
Dorothy also loved traveling and dining with her husband at Red Lobster. Dorothy believed in the old Chinese Proverb: "A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every passerby leaves a mark." Her nurturing spirit will leave a lasting impression on every life she touched.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Julius Murray McManus; her three children, or as she would say, "gifts from God," Ronald and Jenee Lindsay, and Jeffrey Murray McManus; her godchildren Lamont Myers and Charli Davenport; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. All of these she loved and touched deeply.
