Josephine Settlers

Obituary of Josephine E. Settlers

Josephine Evans Settlers was born on December 17, 1938, in Darlington, South Carolina to the late Joseph Evans Sr. and Hannah Pierce Evans, alongside her twin brother Joseph Jr. The family moved to Baltimore, Maryland when she was just three years old. She departed this life suddenly on June 15, 2021. "Phiny", as she was affectionately known, received her education in Baltimore City Public Schools. She graduated from Dunbar High in 1957. Shortly after high school, she started working for the Social Security Administration. She worked there for 27 years until retirement. Afterwards, she began babysitting her grandkids and great grandkids. Phiny really enjoyed spending time with family, especially the children. She devoted all of her free time to babysitting. She even planned yearly trips to amusement parks. Phiny enjoyed watching TV shows, especially soap operas, game shows and reality TV. Her favorite reality show was Keeping up with the Kardashians. Kim was her favorite and she could answer any question related to the Kardashian family. Phiny also loved her snacks. She had to have chips and spice drops. She also loves Royal Farms chicken and Pepsi. She was a devout Christian and she read her bible every day, faithfully. She was baptized at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Phiny met and married Horace Settlers on May13, 1960. From that union, five daughters were born. Phiny was also like a second mother to her stepson Earl. She was a devoted wife to Horace, and they spent a lot of time together until his death in 1988. Phiny was definitely the matriarch of the family. She was the glue that held the family together. She enjoyed talking to and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She loved giving advice. Phiny was quiet and had a soft demeanor. Ask anyone, they would tell you she was very pleasant and had a sweet personality. She was always friendly with her neighbors and made friends easily. She will be sincerely missed by everyone who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace; mother, Hannah Evans; father, Joseph, Sr.; brother, Joseph Jr.; sisters, Helen and Betty; son-in-law Wilson Holmes; niece, Robin; nephews, Freddie and Charles and grandson, Darion Sr. She leaves to mourn daughters Tanya, Velma, Torria, Vonda and Cula; stepson Earl; son-in-law Tyrone Sr.; sisters-in-law Marva, Belle, Elaine, Ruby, Nettie; brother-in-law Nathaniel; grandchildren Chanel, Tierra, Charity, King Black (Andrew), Travis, Tyrone Jr., Brandon, Tanika, Antonio; great-grandchildren Darion, Jr., I'Nel, Riauna, Raina, Tyrone III, Joniah, Tyliah and a host of other relatives and friends. She will surely be missed by her close friend Evelyn as well.
