Obituary of James Calvin Sherman, Sr.

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course. I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day" II Timothy 4: 7 – 8 James Calvin Sherman Sr. was born to the late Reverend Buck Sherman Sr. and Beulah Faulk Sherman on May 4, 1933, in the Bucksport Community of Conway, South Carolina. "Diddy", as his children affectionately called im, earned his heavenly wings at 3:40pm on Monday, August 9, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family. JC, as he was fondly called by most, was educated in the Horry County public school system and he shared many stories of his years working as a sharecropper. On June 2, 1954, JC was joined in holy matrimony to Miss Roberta Sue Carter. This union lasted for 64 years. He came to Baltimore in 1955 to secure employment with the Baltimore Gas and Electric Company where he worked for 39 years and retired in 1994. He was a member of the Southern Baptist Church where he served as the deographer and sang on the early morning choir alongside his wife for many years. He was an avid fisherman and became known as 'Catfish' to family and friends who enjoyed his hobby with him. JC was a mentor to many, and he looked forward to traveling back home to Bucksport, SC often to fellowship with his family. JC leaves to cherish many fond memories seven children: Vernessa White (Roy), Steven Taylor, James Calvin Sherman Jr. (Elease), Bertram Sherman, Deborah Sherman, Anthony Sherman (Antwan), Gwendolyn Roney (Sam)…32 Grandchildren, 28 Great Grandchildren, and 1 Great-Great Grandchild. JC also leaves to cherish many memories: one sister, Marie Weaver of Bucksport, SC; several sisters-in-law: Charlotte Sherman of Bucksport, SC., Addie Mae Bellamy (Buddy) and Archibel Edge (Jimmy) of North Myrtle Beach, SC; Doris Floyd (Benny) and Sadie Mae Carter of Myrtle Beach, SC. Two brothers-in-law: Frank Carter (Daphne) and George Carter (Audrey) of Baltimore, MD; one special nephew, Bobby Kinlaw who was raised with him as a brother; and two long time buddies: Mr. Andrew Easter and Mr. William (Sgt.) Jones. JC was preceded in death by his loving wife, Roberta; one daughter, Cynthia Bellamy; one son, Kevin Sherman Sr.; five brothers: Rev. Bass Sherman, Clarence Sherman, Charlie Sherman, Richard (RJ) Sherman, and Buck Sherman, Jr; four sisters: Ella Pearl Sherman, Lula Dozier, Ella Louise Gagum, and Laura Bellamy. JC was loved immensely and will be sorely missed by manynieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
