Obituary of Lois Quarles Washington
As God's people, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." Colossians 3:12
LOIS MAXINE WASHINGTON, daughter of William and Ethel Quarles, was born on October 26, 1930, and walked into the arms of Jesus on September 19, 2021.
Lois was gifted with a creative, special, warm love, whereby she could serve as a catalyst, liaison, devout Christian, loving, supportive mother and grandmother, caring sister and "always there" Aunt and loyal friend. She had a strong sense of fairness, discernment and justice and would send forth to speak up when unkind acts were being perpetrated on family, friends, and others.
Growing up and being baptized in Sharon Baptist Church, she developed a deep love for God and for children. This led her to pursue a degree in education where she served as a Master Teacher for over thirty years. Lois studied and graduated from Coppin State College with a degree in education. She was determined to demonstrate that all children had the right to learn, grow, be treated fairly, and make positive changes in their lives, through love and guidance.
After meeting and marrying Lindsay Washington, she became a loving mother to Kelvin, Kim, and Kyle – all delights in her heart. She was blessed with mountain top experiences and instilled with a desire to pray unceasingly through all circumstances. JUST A LITTLE TALK WITH JESUS, TELL HIM ALL ABOUT MY TROUBLES.
Lois spent many years serving at Sharon Baptist Church, Heritage United Methodist Church, The Fellowship of Christian Believers and Emmarts United Methodist Church. She sang with the choirs (her joy), cooked, cleaned, tutored (her love), created and acted in plays (her gift), wrote poems, prayers, articles, tributes, retirement speeches, etc., (her talent) and praised the name of Jesus, (her pleasure).
With her sister, Audrey and four other friends, she wrote, produced and directed two plays for "The Futurettes", a group of approximately thirty young girls from 5 to 12 years of age. A major focus for this group was to train children to become obedient followers of Christ.
Lois and delicious Sweet Potato Pies go hand-in-hand. There is no doubt that so many family members, church members, friends and acquaintances have received 1 or 2 pies with a note, on special holidays, during times of joy, and on occasions of sorrow and/or illnesses. She was blessed with a special knack for cooking almost anything including "wrinkled steaks" (chitterlings) on request. She delighted in preparing special big, delicious meals with love and thanksgiving. God gave her the gift of cooking.
Throughout the years, she served by volunteering in the American Red Cross, the Maryland School for the Blind, The Hymns, etc. Lois was often the go to person for planning fun meetings, dinners, and trips.
Lois Maxine leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter Kim and son Kelvin, her sister, Audrey Harden, brother Theron Quarles, grandchildren Jyoti and Domingo; great grandchildren Michael, Marley, Nathan, Anya, Adele, Ashley, Jocelyn and Janee; Connie and Arthur Smith, William and Delores Jessup, Norma Faulkner, Reba Davis, Angie Hall and a host of other relatives and friends.
