To the Family, please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your loved one and my dear and longtime classmate and friend, Paulette. To say her passing was a shock is to understate the reality. I spoke with Paulette on the Thursday before she passed to remind her of the birthday of one of our classmates, with whom she had a special relationship. After giving her the reminder, we engaged in our usual light but predictable banter and reminisced, as we always did, until we signed off with the also predictable admonition to "be safe." I had no idea - nothing was said or indicated - that this would be our last conversation. As I contemplate the more than 60 years that I have known Paulette and our last conversation, I was reminded of how much a family the Poet class of 1961 was and how much a part of that family Paulette was. She will be missed, to be sure, - she already is. It is some consolation that she lived her life well AND usefully. It also helps to realize that the traits and characteristic that allowed her to live well and usefully have been shared with each of us and better still, inexorably, we will share them with those we meet as we continue our own life's journey. In addition to the memories of the time you enjoyed together, I commend to you the perspective expressed in A Parable of Immortality by Henry Van Dyke:
am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength,
and I stand and watch until at last she hangs
like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says,
' There she goes! '
Gone where?
Gone from my sight... that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as she was when she left my side
and just as able to bear her load of living freight
to the place of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment
when someone at my side says,
' There she goes! '
there are other eyes watching her coming...
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout...
' Here she comes! '
And that is dying.
It is Well!

I’ve known Sister Paulette for many years at Social Security. (Her hats and attire color coordinations—what a lady!). We also worked for years together in church. We always had a wonderful relationship. I will miss my friend.
