Mrs. Vaughan or Miss Viola, as we called her, was a neighbor of mine as a teenager and young adult. She lived on Pulaski Street at the southeast corner of Westwood Avenue; I lived three doors east of her house on Westwood. I remember how diligently she raised her daughters Mabel and Patricia with tough love. She also looked out for her neighbors. I am grateful to her for intervening on my behalf with my Mother 50 years ago in a way that led me to make better decisions. She was a wonderful moral and spiritual presence in our tight knit community. My prayers are with her family as they mourn her death and prepare to celebrate her life. Rev. Dr. Kenneth I. Clarke, Sr., formerly of 2017 Westwood Avenue, now in Ithaca, NY. Thanks to our old neighbor, Sam Davis, whose family lived at 2013 Westwood in the long ago, for notifying me about Ms. Vaughan’s passing.
