Obituary of Delores Mae Gainers
Delores Mae Price Gainers, lovingly known as "Ma", "Momma Dee", and "Miss Molly", was born July 9, 1935, in Baltimore, MD to the late Silas and Nannie B. Love Price. God called her to her eternal home on November 22, 2022.
In 1951, she met the love of her life, Thomas H. Gainers, Sr. and on September 22, 1956, they were joined in marriage and together raised two sons: Thomas Jr. and Antonio.
At an early age, Delores was baptized and became a member of Community Baptist Church in Baltimore, MD. Later in her Christian journey, she joined Christian Life Church in Baltimore, MD. In her latter years, she joined Faith Christian Fellowship World Outreach in Randallstown, Maryland.
Momma Dee loved to go camping trips and visit family and friends in Virginia and North Carolina with her sons and foster children. A proud grandmother of four, Delores found joy in spending time, discovering their life adventures, and learning the latest songs and dances. Her love for family placed her in the role of the matriarch. She embraced this role and worked tirelessly to organize family reunions and she established and maintained the family telephone directory to keep everyone connected.
Delores retired after 20 years of service from the Baltimore City Police Department where she was employed as a Crossing Guard. She was most definitely an entrepreneur, offering retail sales from clothing designs, sales as an independent dealer with Stanley, Avon, and Tupperware; as well as owner-operator of mobile flea markets. She was an excellent seamstress and a shrewd negotiator. Those that encountered her intuitively knew that she was not to be played with.
Delores had a love for scholastic achievement and began her education in Annapolis, MD graduating from Carver Technical High School as a design major. Her love for the arts inspired her to continue her education obtaining a certificate in cosmetology. She later studied at Cortez Peters where she earned her license as a Beautician. Momma Dee graduated with an Associates Degree in Arts from Catonsville Community College and later obtained a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Coppin State College in 1990. Over the years, Delores earned a plethora of certificates from Arbutus Public Library, Home Depot, and the Lloyd Keaser Center of Brooklyn Park, MD where she was especially fond of her Bible Study.
Delores was a well-known activist and proud member of the Women's Progressive League for over 30 years. She worked tirelessly to preserve the Community Center property, worked to preserve the Annual Pumphrey Day, and raised money to erect the sign designating the community and its establishment date. Delores singlehandedly petitioned her council members to get Halethorpe Community (Oak Park) recognized with signage. Her love for children inspired her to become a foster parent welcoming many children into her family life and home. They were all near and dear to her heart. Sharing the love of God was her passion and she never considered anyone she met a stranger and welcomed everyone into her home—especially if they could play Pinochle.
Those that knew her experienced the depth of her unconditional love. She loved her family and friends and went out of her way to ensure those relationships stayed intact. In essence, she lived God's Love.
Delores leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 66 years, Thomas H. Gainers Sr., sons: Thomas Gainers Jr. and Antonio Gainers (Jocelyn), Brothers: Silas Price, Jr., Step-Brothers: Everett Berry and Larry Austin. Grandchildren: Marcelette, Jamere, Taylor. and Cherice, Great-Grandson: Braylon. God-Daughters: Barbara Rowlett and Alexis Holmes and a host of foster children, nieces, nephews, cousins, church and community family and friends.
