Obituary of Spencer C. Bonds

Spencer C. Bonds affectionately known as "Spenc" was born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 25, 1932, to the late Sarah Bonds and Freddie Bonds Sr. He was called to his eternal home on November 21, 2022. He completed his secondary education in the Baltimore City Public Schools System where he excelled in many sports, then he moved on to Carver Vocational Technical High School, continuing his sporting activities. He met and married the love of his life, Margaret Bolen in 1954 and this union produced one daughter, Veronica Bonds. Upon completion of high school Spencer received a four-year scholarship to Virginia Union University. As a wide receiver, he was a four-year starter for the Panthers on the football field. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. He was invited to the Baltimore Colts and Pittsburg Steelers training camps upon completing his college career but unfortunately, he was never drafted to either team. He later earned his first Master's degree from Coppin State University, and a second from Loyola College, now Loyola University. For 37 years, he devoted his life to the Baltimore City Public Schools System where he was a beloved teacher, coach, and administrator. He was inducted in the Hall of Fame at Carver Vocational Technical High School and Virginia Union University. He was also named one of the Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America. To the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, he was a lifetime member. Spencer loved gardening. Around the city of Baltimore, he was known as 'the man with the beautiful yard' and he received numerous awards from the Patio Gardener for his beautiful yardwork. He was an ardent fan of the Baltimore Ravens, and everyone knew not to disturb him during football season. Spencer loved the Lord and his church, Ebenezer Baptist Church, Baltimore where he was a member for more than 70 years. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Margaret, daughter Veronica, grandson Vincent Bonds (Quiera Bonds), 3 great grandsons Vincent Bonds Jr., Dominick Bonds and Jaiden Bonds, 3 godsons Stevie Shields, Chester Horn, Edward Grimes, and Alvin R. Burnette; goddaughter Virgilia "Tish" Campbell-Whitter and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends throughout the DMV. Spencer's parent and siblings Freddie Jr and Elizabeth preceded him in death. Although Spencer's mortal remains lie here today, his spirit and legacy will live on in the lives of all those whom he touched. Rest well Champion, you have finished your race!
