Obituary of Mary O Smith
Mary Otelia Smith (Eason), daughter of the late Chester and Frances Eason was born on June 29, 1944, in Sunbury, North Carolina of Gates County. God called His angel home on November 28, 2022.
Mary family relocated to Baltimore, Maryland during her early age; where she received her education through the Baltimore City Public School System. She graduated from Frederick Douglas High.
Mary gave her life to Christ at an early age and was baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost. Mary and her family joined Thessalonian Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Oscar C. Hoggs. In 1964, Thessalonian Baptist Church united with Salem Baptist Church and was renamed Salem Thessalonian Baptist Church. Mary served in numerous capacities throughout her membership with Salem Thessalonian Baptist Church. Her service included President of the Trustee's Board, member of the Senior Choir, and member of the Usher Board. She was often called upon and she readily showed up. Her relationship with God was the single most important thing in her life. She would always be ready to tell you "What her Bible says". For example, she would tell us: "My Bible says you will reap what you sow", or "My Bible says weeping endures for a night, but joy comes in the morning". I don't think there ever was a day to go by that we did not hear what her Bible says. She loved the Lord. She trusted the Lord; and she would let you know it.
Upon her departure from Salem Thessalonian Baptist Church, Mary joined First St. Stephen's Baptist Church in 2002, under the leadership of Pastor Aggie L. Brown Jr.; where she remained a member until her death.
While in her later years of High School, Mary met and fell in love with Arthur Leroy Johnson. Although they never married, out of their love they had four children: Cynthia, Virgil, Karen, and Eric; whom they raised together. She later met and fell in love with the late Edward C. Smith. Mary and Edward married and remained happily married until his death.
After graduating High School, Mary assisted her father for many years with running their family Convenient Store located on the corner of North Ave. and Dukeland Street. The business was later sold, and Mary became employed at St. Agnes Hospital as a Nurse Aide. She later became a housewife after marriage.
Mary loved to cook; and boy could she cook. I am sure you all remember her potato salad, fried chicken, fried fish, etc. She sure could throw it down in that kitchen. Umm, umm, umm.
However, Mary's greatest enjoyment in life was family. She loved nothing more than to travel from state-to-state visiting family or with friends; as well as receiving family during their travels. In fact, at the time of her death she was visiting her grandson family in Indiana. Mary enjoyed the simple things out of life. Such as unexpected visits from her children and grandchildren. She would never want you to leave; she just enjoyed company with family and friends.
Mary was the oldest child. She had four younger brothers: Fred, Robert Earl, Kevin, and Antonio. She was preceded in death by Fred, Robert Earl, and Kevin.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories: her brother, Antonio (Crystal), her daughter, Karen, her son Eric Sr. (Shanell), her goddaughter, Tambra (Eva), her nephew, Jonothan, her grandsons: Eric Jr. (Alison), Derek Sr. (Katy), and LaMar, her granddaughter, Brittney; her great grandchildren: Khai, Derek Jr., Shallah, Aubrey, and Kiersten, and a host of relatives and friends.
Mary will be met at the Gates of Heaven by Mr. Eddie, Cynthia, and Virgil.
