Obituary of Nannie Olivia Barker
Nannie Olivia Barker, affectionately known as Libbie, daughter of the late Clara and Odell Harris. Libbie was born on June 19, 1939, in Saxe, Virginia. She was eighty-four years old when on February 11, 2024, she departed this life at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
Shortly after Libbie was born, Clara and Odell moved to Baltimore, Maryland in 1940. In 1942, Libbie's little brother Willie Jerome was born, who sadly proceeded her in death in 1988. Libbie was educated in Baltimore City, where she attended Dunbar High School. It was at Dunbar that she met first husband Ellsworth Jackson. From that union Libbie and Ellsworth was blessed with four children Darryl, Dwayne, Karen and Damon. Some years after Libbie and Ellsworth divorced, on a trip to visit her mother in Atlantic City she met Dennis Barker who she married in May 1972. From that union Libbie and Dennis were blessed with a daughter Tiana. Sadly in 1978 she had to lay Dennis to rest. After becoming a busy single mother of five children Libbie was able to return to school and received her GED.
Libbie recommitted her life to Christ alongside her Mother Clara and joined Perkins Square Baptist Church. Libbie was a philanthropist in her on right, she frequently donated to various charities like St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, the Disabled Veterans and The Boys Clubs of America to name a few. All from which she received various certificates and gifts for her donations. She loved collecting snow globes and angels and if you've ever been to her house, it's very evident. She loved shopping and traveling, especially traveling back and forth to Atlantic City to visit her mother, trips to Deep Creek, MD with her children, and bus trips to different cities and casinos. But most of all She enjoyed spending time with family, especially family gatherings at one of her aunt's houses where they would eat, drink, talk and laugh. Libbie also loved the holidays; she enjoyed cooking holiday meals for her family. Turkey, ham, mac & cheese and the best stuffing you'll ever eat, but her showstopper at any gathering was her potato salad. In 2006, Libbie retired from Case-Mason Filling Company which freed her to live and enjoy life a little more in her latter years.
Libbie was very close with her mother Clara, and when Clara moved back to Baltimore, she doted on her mother. Libbie was a strong, stern, funny, devoted and loving mother. She loved her children fiercely. The epitome of unconditional and unwavering love. Right or wrong, good or bad, or ups and downs, she was right there to defend, protect or lift her children up. She was also a devoted grandmother as well, helping her daughter Tiana raise her two children Brandon and Gabriella. In 1998 at the age of 59 Libbie bought her home, which was one of her proudest moments. She loved sitting on her front porch in the summertime chatting it up with her neighbors.
Libbie was loved by all who knew her. During her last few years, she was challenged by illness, but she stayed strong and determined not to be crippled by her health, until she couldn't fight anymore. In her final days she was surrounded and comforted by all her children, who loved her just as fiercely as she loved them.
Libbie leaves to cherish her memory: Her two daughters Karen Jackson, Tiana Barker, her three sons: Darryl Jackson, Dwayne Jackson and Damon Jackson, eight granddaughters, Pamela Jackson, Tierra Jackson, Jazmine Jackson, De'Asia Jackson, Shanice Jackson, Ronnesha Jackson, Breonna Jackson and Gabriella Barker, seven grandsons, Brian Jackson, Montell Jackson (decd 2022), Quantez Jackson, Damon Jackson Jr., Darryl Jackson Jr, Sean Jackson and Brandon Stevenson, five great-granddaughters and eight great-grandsons,and host of family and friends.
