Obituary of Betty L. Smith
Today we celebrate the life of Betty Lou Smith known to many as "Patsy". God
called his child home on February 12, 2024. Patsy was born June 1, 1941, in Harnett County,
North Carolina. She attended school in North Carolina. She was the youngest of the Covington
family and she was known to be caring, loving, and strong willed.
Patsy had three brothers Robert, Wiley, Buddy, and an older sister Bessie all are in Glory
with the Lord. Her only surviving sibling is her sister Minnie Covington. In 1960 Patsy and her
late husband Alexander Smith left the simple life in North Carolina and headed for a new
beginning in Baltimore, Maryland.
Once she settled in Baltimore, Patsy found herself working many jobs before finding comfort in
her career as a Caregiver at the Belair Convalesarium Home. Patsy served many families for
over twenty years and received various awards and recognition for her hard work.
Patsy was a single mother and raised four children. She was determined to see her children
have a decent life. It was not always easy, but she learned to lean on God when times were not
so great. She loved the Lord and loved attending New Psalmist Baptist Church where she
was an active member until her death.
One of our greatest memories will forever be "Momma's cooking" Patsy loved to cook and she
really could cook. She cooked on many occasions for her family and friends. If you ever visited Patsy
while she was cooking you never left empty handed. You were guaranteed to leave with the largest plate
she could pack. She especially loved cooking for the holidays and hosting summer cookouts when the
family would come up from North Carolina. She enjoyed a good party, shopping, dressing, traveling,
and spending time with her grand kids.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one sister Minnie Covington, four children Evelyn, Bernard (Trisha), Brenda, and Curtis (Tracey). Grandchildren 11 and one grandchild Michael Jr proceeded in her death, eight great
grandchildren as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family would like to give a special thanks to Oscar Pierce, Cecil Boston, and Gerard Holt for being her support system when the family was not available. Her
love for you all makes you family to us.
