Pearl Curry

Obituary of Pearl Elizabeth Curry

Pearl Elizabeth Curry departed this life peacefully at Northwest Hospital in Baltimore, MD on August 10, 2024. She was 101 years old. Pearl was born at Johns Hopkins Hospital on Saturday, December 9, 1922 at 7:30am. She was the firstborn child of Chestine Tucker and John Willie Tucker. Pearl grew up in Baltimore alongside her two sisters, Evelyn Sessoms and Chestine Cole. She resided in Baltimore all of her life and worked at a local hotel for a number of years and, later as a day worker for several families. Pearl met her husband, Walter Curry, at a neighborhood store after she stopped in to buy a soda and some candy. After dating briefly, the two married on February 24,1942. Shortly after their union, Pearl had three children, Walter, Yvonne, and Marsha. She took an active role in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, caring for and providing support to her grandchildren whenever help was needed. As her grandchildren grew, Pearl would captivate them with stories of her own childhood, sharing life lessons and skills she learned along her journey. Her favorite holiday was Children's Day and she made a big deal of it, showering her grandkids with gifts and treats. Pearl never met a stranger. She was outgoing and friendly, and would often engage strangers in one of her stories within minutes of an encounter. She was a meticulous dresser and absolutely loved looking good from head to toe. Every one of Pearl's outfits were well-coordinated and accessorized with earrings, necklaces, and rings. She was slightly eccentric in that she liked and wore unique jewelry pieces. Pearl also enjoyed dressing up for the holidays, be it one of Santa's elves or as a witch for Halloween. She also enjoyed shopping with her daughters, Yvonne and Marsha. Pearl's eccentricity spilled over into her collection of unique trinkets. She liked to collect items that appeared to be one thing, but were different from its intended purpose, like a purse which was really a lamp or a bottle of wine masquerading as an umbrella. One of Pearl's favorite hobbies was collecting salt and pepper shakers, and through the years she amassed hundreds from near and far. Pearl is survived by two daughters Yvonne Curry and Marsha Curry; four granddaughters Kim Oliver, Barbara Curry (Charles Rice), Dena Roney (Jerry Roney), and Tiffani Freeman (David Freeman); six great-grandchildren Bryan Roney, Danyelle Reid, Jessica Roney, Jadia Roney, Malaki Freeman, and Kierstin Oliver; and host of other family members and friends. Pearl loved as her own Andrea Jackson and Siniah Wheeler and a very dear friend, Diane Brandon. Pearl was preceded in death by her parents: Chestine Tucker and John Willie Tucker; two sisters Evelyn Sessoms and Chestine Cole; son Walter Curry, Jr., and grandson Kevin Curry.
