Obituary of Delores Lewis Curbeam
Delores Lewis Curbeam, born on August 18, 1943, in Appomattox, Virginia, was the beloved fifth child of the late Erma and William Lewis. On September 24, 2024, Delores peacefully departed this life, to join her Heavenly Father.
Raised in a loving Christian home, Delores embraced her faith from an early age. She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized at Union Baptist Church in Sparrows Point, Maryland, where she faithfully served on the usher board, choir, and in Sunday school.
Delores attended Sollers Point High School, where she was honored with the title of Miss Sollers Point High. She later pursued higher education at Morgan State University and received a Master's in Education from Johns Hopkins University.
Delores was a devoted member of Union Baptist until she relocated to Omaha, Nebraska. In Omaha, she actively participated in numerous church ministries, organizing prayer groups and Bible studies. Alongside her prayer group, Delores was instrumental in creating impactful programs at Boys Town, hosting Saturday events for the youth. Upon returning to Maryland, she attended Shiloh Baptist Church, Harvest Christian Church and Friendship Baptist Church. Wherever she attended she was actively involved in the Sunday School, Bible Study Classes and Prayer Meetings often serving in a leadership role.
In 1965, Delores married her beloved husband, James Curbeam. Together, they shared 58 years of love, faith, and partnership until James' passing in January 2023. From this union three children were born Angela, James and Carlisa.
Beyond her work in the church, Delores was a passionate advocate for civil rights. As a proud member of the NAACP, she participated in the historic March on Washington in 1963. Her career as a dedicated educator touched many lives, particularly through her years of teaching fifth grade. Delores taught at, Baltimore County Public Schools, Boys Town in Omaha, and Omaha Public Schools until her retirement.
Delores lived a purpose-filled life, exemplifying the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. She found joy in gardening, sewing, cooking, and cherished time spent playing cards and Rummikub with her family.
